Waste tip Sea – Is the ecosystem sea at risk?

Waste tip Sea – Is the ecosystem sea at risk? Is the question asked by Highsea year 9. To examine and answer this question a expedition to Iceland was organized. In June 2012 the students took samples from various beaches along volcanoes, gushers and glacier lakes. The beaches were divided into different sectors and the students took samples of sediment cores from each of these sector. In addition the respective beach sector was searched for “macro-plastic” to get an idea of the proportion of “micro-plastic” and “macro-plastic”.

The samples have meanwhile been analyzed for their amount of plastic and composition at the AWI and will be published in 2013 yet.
