Highsea II – 2003-2006

Expedition in August 2005 with the lugger Lovis

Research question: Is there any deep water from the previous winter left in August?

“Deep water” is formed in fall and winter during the sea ice formation in the waters around Spitsbergen. When water cools down and the salt concentration increases, the density increases as well. The denser water sinks to the sea floor and spreads southward. The aim of this expedition was to find out whether remains of the denser water can still be found in August.

What did the students do?
The students took measurements with the CDT, a sensor which measures salinity, temperature and depth. The sensor is lowered from the ship into the water and records the results both on the way down and on the way back up. The data was later analyzed at the AWI.
